Resin patios and paths in Hartlepool

Resin-bound stone gives a smooth, seamless finish with no joints for weeds and a surface that lets rain soak straight through. It is well suited to garden paths, curved shapes and awkward corners that would need a lot of slab cutting.

What resin-bound actually is

Small natural stones are mixed with a clear resin and trowelled out into a flat, even layer. Once it has cured, the stones are locked together with tiny gaps between them, so water drains through instead of lying on top.

It is not the same as resin-bonded, where loose stones are scattered over a coat of resin. That finish is rougher, sheds stones and is not porous. For patios and garden paths, resin-bound is what you want.

Why people choose it

  • No joints. Nothing for weeds or moss to root in and nothing to re-point.
  • Porous. Rain drains through, so less standing water, as long as the base below can drain too or the water has somewhere to go.
  • Any shape you like. Curves and circles are no harder than straight lines.
  • Plenty of colours. Natural stone blends from silver and grey through to gold and bronze.
  • Smooth underfoot, which makes it good for paths, pushchairs and anyone a bit unsteady on their feet.

Laying it right

Resin is only as good as the base, and the mix has to be right on the day:

  1. A sound base. Usually a purpose-laid porous base, or existing concrete or tarmac if it is solid, level and free of cracks.
  2. Edging to hold the resin and give a clean line against lawn and borders.
  3. UV-stable resin. Ask for an aliphatic, UV-stable resin, which resists the yellowing cheaper resins can show.
  4. The right depth and dry weather. Resin needs dry conditions to cure, so on this stretch of coast the weather forecast decides the laying day.

Where resin suits best

Garden paths, small courtyards, areas round trees and borders, and patios with an unusual shape. If you prefer the look of individual slabs, go for porcelain or natural stone. A resin path also pairs well with steps in stone or porcelain.

Questions people ask

Can resin go over my old patio?

Sometimes. If the existing concrete or paving is solid, level and not cracked or moving, resin can go over it. Loose or sunken slabs need lifting first. We'll check at the visit.

Does resin go green?

Less than most surfaces as there are no joints, but leaves and shade can still lead to some growth on the surface. A regular brush and an occasional wash keep it clean.

Is resin slippery?

A well-laid resin-bound surface has a slight texture. Ask about anti-slip options for shady or sloping spots.

How much does a resin patio cost?

It depends on the area, the base needed and the stone blend. See what affects the price or ask for a free quote.
